ECM Reprogramming May Be Necessary To Keep MIL Off
Subaru of America states in Service Program Bulletin WWF-89 from 4/2002 that certain vehicles may require ECM programming to prevent MIL illumination. The ECM logic for the air / fuel ratio circuit may not be broad enough to accept signal parameters of the air / fuel ratio sensor.
If the air / fuel ratio sensor signal fluctuates repeatedly beyond existing parameters of the ECM logic, the MIL will illuminate steadily during vehicle operation. By reprogramming the ECM, the air / fuel ratio signal parameters will be broadened to correct this condition.
This is a software issue and does not impact drivability or vehicle emissions. For the vehicles referenced above, it is recommended that the ECM be reprogrammed prior to replacing the original catalytic converter to obtain a more accurate MIL status.
For complete details, refer to Subaru Service Program Bulletin WWF-89 dated 4/2002.
